Building a coffee bar in the dead of winter
How a $3,000 cabinet quote and a stack of YouTube videos turned into my first woodworking project.
For the longest time, I’ve been brewing my morning cup in the basement at our wet bar, taking up valuable bar space. I got the opportunity last December to move it upstairs to the kitchen if I can find some cabinetry to put up there. Previously, we just had a China cabinet there that didn’t really fit the space. Naturally, I went online to find some custom cabinets that would fit the space. To my surprise, I found an upper and lower cabinet that would arrive pre-assembled and fit our space for a whopping $3,000 USD. There was no way I could spend that money on two cabinets. So I did what any person would do: go to YouTube. Video after video, my confidence grew. Next thing you know, I was at my local lumber store ordering some sheets of plywood. And just like that, I started building cabinets in the dead of winter. Quite the project for my first woodworking endeavor. Lots of mistakes were made, lots of learnings, but they’re currently installed and in use.
